Why stitch type drives the estimate

Thread-consumption ratios are a real technique used by garment-manufacturing engineers to plan thread purchasing before cutting a single piece: multiply a seam’s finished length by a ratio specific to the stitch class, and the result is a workable estimate of how much thread that seam will actually use. The ratio is higher than 1 because every stitch loops and locks thread rather than laying it flat, and it climbs sharply for stitch types that interlock more separate threads — a plain lockstitch needs the least, while a multi-thread overlock or coverstitch needs several times as much for the same seam length.

Summing that estimate across every seam in a garment, then adding a waste buffer for tension adjustment and thread breaks, gives a total that converts cleanly into a spool count — useful whether you’re buying thread for one project or estimating for a small batch.

Why does thread use so much more length than the seam itself?

Every stitch loops thread around itself and through the fabric, which uses far more length than the straight-line distance it covers. A plain lockstitch typically runs about 2.5 to 3 times the seam length in thread; that ratio is called a thread-consumption ratio, and it's a standard estimating method in garment manufacturing.

Why do overlock and coverstitch seams need so much more thread?

A lockstitch uses two threads total (needle and bobbin). An overlock or serger stitch interlocks several separate threads at once — needle threads, an upper looper, and a lower looper — each running the full length of the seam, so the combined consumption per inch is much higher. A coverstitch adds even more thread legs and typically consumes the most of all.

What should I use for the waste/take-up buffer?

15% is a reasonable working default. It covers thread used up in tension adjustment when you re-thread the machine, test stitches, thread breaks, and the leftover on a spool that's too short to be useful. Push it higher if you're new to a stitch type and expect more test runs.

Is this precise enough for a production run?
